Abstract:   In the framework of Molecular Mechanics, we describe carbon nanotubes as systems of particles that interact by classical atomistic potentials. Optimal configurations are identified with local minimizers and their fine geometry is fully characterized in terms of lower-dimensional problems. Under small axial traction, such local minimizers are proved to be periodic.
